GU men's swimming grabs 15 All-NEAC honors, Bennett and Snape repeat top honors

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) released its 2012 All-Conference Swimming and Diving Teams recently and two-time defending conference men’s champion Gallaudet University grabbed 15 spots on the three different teams. GU senior Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned his second straight NEAC Swimmer of the Year award, while Bill Snape was named Coach of the Year for a second consecutive year. Nine different Bison men’s swimmers earned an all-conference honor.

A swimmer needs to place in first, second or third in an event at the NEAC championships to earn all-conference status. The 2012 NEAC swimming and diving championships were held Feb. 17-19, on the campus of Cazenovia College.

Bennett led the way with seven All-NEAC honors that included four first-team honors, one second-team and two third-team honors. Four of his honors came via relay teams while three individual events he won to earn first team honors. Bennett set team, NEAC and conference championship records in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle with times of 1:48.03 and 4:55.04, respectively. His involvement in three Bison relays (200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays) results in team records. The 800 free relay team broke the NEAC and conference championship times with a first-place time of 7:48.11.

Junior DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) matched Bennett with seven All-NEAC honors as four of his honors came from relay teams. He led the Bison with three second-team honors. He bested the NEAC and conference championship records in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 58.63 seconds and 1:48.03, respectively. He was also part of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay.

Senior James McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.) earned six All-NEAC honors, five from relay teams and a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle. He led all Bison with three third-team honors. There are five relay school records and McGowan is the only member of all five teams, four of which were set in 2012 but the 400-yard medley relay was set back in 2008.

Seniors Dan Burton (Waukesha, Wis.) and Sean Ryant (Cleveland, Ohio) finished their careers with three and two all-conference honors, respectively, all from being members of second or third place relay teams. Senior Hipolito Deluna (Chicago, Ill.) was a member of the third-place 200 freestyle relay.

Junior Jason Almendarez (Houston, Texas) won the 1-meter diving event with a NEAC and conference championship record 296.05 points. Freshman Robb Ingram (Salem, Ala.) was second in the 1-meter diving event and was a member of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay. Sophomore Richard Zabelski (Saginaw, Mich.) earned All-NEAC third team honors in the 400 IM.
