Bison men's swimming team jumps out to early lead at NEAC championships

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men’s swimming team kicked off the 2012 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships with a solid performance as the defending champions sit in first place with 183 team points. The Bison won two events and set three team records and two conference marks along the way.

Wells College sits in second place with 161 points, Cazenovia College is third with 124 points and SUNY Cobleskill is fourth with 72.

Senior Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.04 to set a new conference record that he previously set at last year’s championships of 4:58.22. The new time is also a new school record.

Junior Jason Almendarez (Houston, Texas) won the 1 meter diving competition as he accumulated 296.05 points to set a new conference and team record. Freshman Robb Ingram (Salem, Ala.) was second in the diving competition with 258.55 points.

The Bison broke another team record in the 200 freestyle relay to start the meet as the senior team Bennett, Dan Burton (Waukesha, Wis.), Hipolito Deluna (Chicago, Ill.) and James McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.) touched the wall in 1:35.57. GU finished third in the event but the time broke the old record set in 2010. Bennett, Burton and McGowan were on that record-setting team two years ago as well.

Junior DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) finished second in the 200 IM (2:15.26) while McGowan was fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.34 seconds).

The teams return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 18) for the second day of three of the 2012 NEAC championships.
