COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men’s swimming and diving team, the two-time defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions, began their title defense Friday at the 2013 championships being hosted by SUNY Cobleskill.
The Bison sit in third place with 119 team points as Cazenovia College and Wells College are tied for first with 160 points. The host Fighting Tigers has 107 team points and sit in fourth place.
Gallaudet’s 400-yard medley relay team of senior Jacob Klenk (Westerville, Ohio), freshman Myles Goldberg (Frederick, Md.), junior DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) and junior Tony Dall (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished third overall with a time of 4:44.86 to earn 24 team points.
Goldberg, freshman Neal Matthews (Kent Island, Md.), sophomore Bernarndo Toledo (Puerto Rico) and senior Daniel Katz-Hernandez (Montgomery Village, Md.) were fourth overall in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:49.04 to earn 22 points.
Matthews finished second in the 1-meter diving competition with 198.95 points to secure 13 points for GU.
Katz-Hernandez was the top Bison in the 200 IM when he finished sixth overall (3:00.42). Dall and Toledo finished eight and ninth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle with times of 26.68 and 27.78 seconds.
The second day of the NEAC swimming and diving championships will take place Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m. in seven different events.
