CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men’s swimming and diving team are still very much alive at the 2014 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships as the Bison sit in second place, a day after being in first. GU (329 team points) is only six points behind SUNY Cobleskill (335) after two complete days of swimming on the campus of Cazenovia College. Of the seven events held on Saturday, the Fighting Tigers took first in four of them, allowing them to take hold of first place. Cazenovia College and Wells College round out the top four with 284 points and 163 points, respectively.
The Bison’s 200-yard medley relay team of senior DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.), junior Abdiel Davila-Cruz (Orland, Fla.), freshman Ryan Klock (Puyallup, Wash.) and sophomore Maurice Abenchuchan (St. Augustine, Fla.) finished third overall (1:51.10) to start off Saturday night's finals, which earned 22 team points. Abenchuchan added a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.89).
Everton-Lovell was very valuable for the Bison on Saturday as he posted a second-place finish in the 400 IM (5:02.07) and a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:00.74). Freshman Jeronimo Ocampos (Asuncion, Paraguay) was valuable in the 400 IM as well as he placed third with a time of 6:30.99, earning 12 team points. Senior Tony Dall (Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched in with a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (2:19.13).
The final six events will take place Sunday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and the finals at 5 p.m. The Bison will try and rely on their depth to secure valuable team points to regain the top spot. The events consist of the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 fly, one meter dive and the 400 freestyle relay.
