COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men's swimming and diving team finished off the podium for the first time at a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship on Sunday at SUNY Cobleskill. The Bison, the defending conference champs, placed fourth overall with 239 team points.
The host Fighting Tigers won the championship going away with 655 points followed by Cazenovia College (405 points) and Wells College (337).
Gallaudet's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Dary Berke, junior Neal Matthews (Kent Island, Md.), senior Bernardo Toledo (Río Piedras, Puerto Rico) and junior Abdiel Davila-Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) finished fourth overall with a time of 4:06.38 in the final event of the three-day championships.
Davila-Cruz was fourth in the 200 butterfly as he touched the wall in 2:32.20. Sophomore Xuan Lin (Fulton, Ill.) finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke (3:08.38) while freshman Nathan Parkin (Elgin, Ill.) and sophomore David Bruno (Patchogue, N.Y.) were fifth (25:22.82) and sixth (25:43.61), respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle. Four different Bison finished ninth through 12th place in the 100 freestyle led by Matthews' time of 1:03.34 followed by Berke (1:03.35), Parkin (1:04.79) and Toledo (1:07.02).
Gallaudet was making its fifth appearance at the NEAC championships since it joined the conference. The Bison have won three men's conference titles (2011, 2012, 2014).
