WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's swimming and diving program made its long awaited home debut here Saturday at the Field House pool and dropped a double dual meet against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rivals. The Bison lost 165-71 to Wells College and 170-64 to SUNY Cobleskill. The Fighting Tigers defeated the Express, 160-88.
Gallaudet (1-8, 0-3 NEAC) had three second-place finishes and one third-place finish in the competitive NEAC meet. SUNY Cobleskill won 14 of the 15 events while Wells had one first-place finish.
Freshman Gideon Firl (Frederick, Md.) led the Bison as he placed second in the 50-yard freestyle as he touched the wall in 24.89 seconds and just missed SUNY Cobleskill first-place swimmer Will Timony's time of 23.97. Firl was second in the 200 backstroke (2:37.55) and was a member of Gallaudet's second-place 200 medley relay team (2:08.34). The rookie wrapped up his competition with a fourth-place, overall, performance in the 100 butterfly (1:08.95).
- Gallaudet's 200 medley relay team of junior Dary Berke (Fremont, Calif.), junior Xuan Lin (Mount Prospect, Ill.), sophomore Arthur Danlin (Garden City, Mich.) and Firl finished second with a time of 2:08.34
- Danlin placed third, overall, in the 1,000 freestyle (16:28.49)
- GU's next home meet will be Saturday, Jan. 23, vs. Stevenson at 1 p.m. on Senior Day
Gallaudet is off for the rest of the semester and will jump back into the pool in the New Year. The next meet for the Bison will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, in York, Pa., where they will face Penn St.-Altoona and the host Spartans of York (Pa.) College in a double dual meet.
