Gallaudet's Martinez awarded fourth NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Week honor

GANESVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its conference student-athlete of the week awards for the week of Jan. 24 and for the fifth time this season a member of the Gallaudet University men's swimming and diving team was honored. Freshman Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) was bestowed with the honor of NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Martinez, a breaststroke and distance freestyle swimmer, won three individual events and swam on a winning relay team as Gallaudet defeated Stevenson University 119-87 in a non-conference meet. Martinez swam the second leg of the 200-yard medley relay that the Bison won in 1:57.79. He overwhelmed the field in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:03.74, more than three minutes ahead of the second-place finisher. Martinez also swept the breaststroke events with a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.23) and the 200 breaststroke (2:24.20).

SUNY Cobleskill's Emily Sugrue earned the honor NEAC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season. Sugrue won three individual events and was a member of a winning 200 medley relay team (2:06.42) that opened the meet against Elms College, which ended in a 122-122 tie. Sugrue's individual victories came in the 50 backstroke (31.18), 100 freestyle (59.41) and the 50 butterfly (30.58).

GU HONORS
This is Gallaudet's fifth NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Week award and Martinez's fourth.
