Gallaudet's Jonathan Tikhonoff picks up NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Week honor

Gallaudet men's swimmer Jonathan Tikhonoff gives a high five to visiting swimmer from Frostburg State University after the two competed in a swim race in the Field House pool.

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its conference student-athlete of the week awards for the week of Jan. 16 and Gallaudet University senior Jonathan Tikhonoff (Folsom, Calif.) was selected as the NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Week for the first time this season.

Tikhonoff won six individual events and was a member of one first-place relay last weekend in the final two home meets of his collegiate career. In a meet against Penn St.-Altoona last Friday, he won the 100-yard butterfly and 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. The following day in GU's win over Bridgewater (Va.), Tikhonoff added three more individual wins and was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that earned first place. Tikhonoff's winning time in the 200-yard butterfly of 2:13.50 was a new personal record for the 2017 NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Year.

It was a clean sweep for the Gallaudet swimming program as sophomore Jackie Perkins (Hampton, Va.) was selected as the NEAC Women's Swimmer of the Week. She placed first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke last Friday in an 110-70 win over Penn St.-Altoona. Perkins capped Friday evening with a second-place finish, out of five swimmers, in the 100-yard freestyle.  The next day against Bridgewater (Va.), Perkins picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. She also competed in the 50-yard freestyle and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed third.

This is Gallaudet's fifth NEAC Swimmer of the Week honor this year and Tikhonoff's second of his career.

Gallaudet will wrap-up the regular-season schedule Saturday, Jan. 20, against Stevenson University at 2:30 p.m. The meet will be held at nearby McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md.
