WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University men's swimming and diving program picked up its first head-to-head win here Saturday as the Bison defeated North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Wells College, 115-47.
Gallaudet (1-2) won 10 of 11 events as four different swimmers won two or more events. Sophomore Ben Sealts (Ottawa, Ohio) led the way with three individual first-place finishes.
The Bison won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.99) with a combination of freshman Barry McGrain III (Lakeville, N.Y.), freshman Alton Markel (Buda, Texas), junior Jason Cruz (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman AJ Markel (University Park, Md.).
Sealts finished first in the 200-yard IM (2:05.38), 100-yard butterfly (56.85) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.82).
McGrain set a new personal best time in the 200-yard freestyle when he touched the wall in 2:07.31, over two seconds faster than his previous best time (2:09.77). He finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.71).
AJ Markel made his GU swimming debut and finished first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle with times of 24.58 and 58.65, respectively.
Sophomore Abe Polanco (Devine, Texas) placed first in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events with times of 8:16.94 and 16:57.35, respectively.
Wells won the 200-yard medley relay (2:21.97) as it edged Gallaudet's team (2:25.76) by almost four seconds.
- Alton Markel was second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.71)
- Cruz was second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.90)
- Sophomore Rett Jala (McAllen, Texas) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.84) and third in the 200-yard IM (3:27.90)
- Sophomore Xiangming Liu (Dandong, China) was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:46.31)
