Men's track and field wraps up indoor season at SU Open

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Gallaudet University men's track and field program concluded its indoor portion of the 2016 season here Saturday at the Susquehanna University Open. While no school records were broken, several student-athletes still put on a strong showing in their respective events. No team scores were kept at this invite.

In the men's shot put, freshman Garrett Springer (Faribault, Minn.) placed 11th out of 41 with a throw of 12.23 meters (40 feet, 1.50 inches). Sophomore Dane Pelz (Oregon, Ohio) finished 34th with a throw of 9.36 meters (30 feet, 8.5 inches) and senior Joseph Gardner (Port Jervis, N.Y.) was 41th with a throw of 8.08 meters (26 feet, 6.25 inches).

Junior John Isaacson (Clive, Iowa) placed 19th out of 24 in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.18 seconds. He also ran in the 800-meter event where he finished 44th (2:12.53) out of 64 runners.

Sophomore Toraneau Varice (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) was 15th out of 61 runners in the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 7.37 seconds. Roberts was 47th (7.77) and sophomore Shawn Benavente (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 52nd (7.80).

The 4x200 meter relay team of Roberts, Varice, senior Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Benavente finished with an official time of 1:40.65, which was good for 13th out of 16 relay teams.

Sophomore Vicente Perez (Cicero, Ill.) placed 26th out of 45 runners in the 1-mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 56.30 seconds. He also ran in the 3,000-meter run, finishing 25th out of 52 with a time of 9:39.55.

Benavente and junior Joshua Branscomb (Memphis, Tenn.) ran in the 400-meter dash as Benavente finished 20th with a time of 54.74 seconds while Branscomb finished 42nd (1:00.33).


  • Sophomore Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas) finished 27th out of 31 in the long jump with a jump of 5.34 meters (17 feet, 6.25 inches).
  • Benavente finished the 200-meter dash in 37th place (25.04 seconds) while Branscomb was 59th in the same event with a time of 27.63 seconds.

The Bison will now prepare to head outdoors and travel to Salisbury, Md., on Saturday, March 5, to participate in the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet at 11 a.m.
