School records fall as Gallaudet competes at Hopkins/Loyola Invitational

BALTIMORE - The Gallaudet University men's track and field team placed fifth at the Hopkins/Loyola Track & Field Invitational here Friday hosted by Johns Hopkins University and Loyola (Md.) University on the Hopkins Eastern Campus on 33rd street.

Bloomfield University won the 14-team meet with 138.5 points followed by the host Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins University (131.5), Stevenson University (102), University of Mary Washington (91) and Gallaudet (59).

Freshman Eric Gregory (Metairie, La.) won the 100- and 200-meter dash events with times of 10.75 and 21.56 seconds, respectively. His time in the 200-meter dash is a new school record as he improves on his personal best time of 21.74, which was the school record that was set two weeks ago.

Gregory was also part of GU's 4x100 meter relay team that shattered a 30-year-old school mark. Senior Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas), Gregory, senior Toraneau Varice (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and freshman Brady Perry (Washington, D.C.) finished third overall with a time of 42.59. 

The old school record was 42.86 set by Rohan Smith, Michael Cross, Jr., Eric Roberts and Phillip Nojoku set the mark on April 29, 1989 at the Millersville Invitational in Millersville, Pa.

Senior Michael Haynes (Edwardsville, Ill.) won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.14. Senior Gunner Hahn (Delavan, Wis.) was right behind in sixth place (16.03).

In the field, freshman Liam Painter (Edgewood, N.M.) was third in the pole vault as he cleared 2.89 meters.

Junior JaQuan Thomas (Savannah, Ga.) was fifth in the shot put (10.95) and sixth in the discus throw (34.32 meters). Senior Ronald Mattingly (Miami, Fla.) was eighth in the hammer throw (31.57 meters).


  • Freshman Nicholas Smith (Hamburg, Pa.) was sixth in the javelin (42.13 meters)
  • Perry was sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.27) while Varice was 13th (11.47)
  • Hahn was ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.68)
  • Mattingly was 11th in the shot put (9.94 meters) and 14th in the discus (29.36 meters)
  • Roberts was 15th in the 400-meter dash (55.15)

GU will host the Gallaudet University Invitational next Saturday, April 20, at 9:30 a.m.
