Gregory sets 200-meter dash record at Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. -The 2019 Wendy's Seahawk Track & Field Invitational, hosted by UNC Wilmington (UNCW), wrapped up here Saturday as 14 schools competed at the newly-renovated Harold Greene Track & Field Complex. No team scores were kept.

Freshman Eric Gregory (Metairie, La.) broke the school record in the 200-meter dash as he sprinted through the finish line with a time of 21.95 seconds. The old mark of 22.00 was held by senior Toraneau Varice (Pompano Beach, Fla.) set in 2017 and Rohan Smith set in 1988. Gregory placed fifth overall while Varice was eighth with a time of 22.28.

Gregory and Varice finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash final with times of 11.03 and 11.13. 

Gregory was the top Bison in the 400-meter run (51.36) as he placed 12th and senior Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas) was 23rd (54.59).

Senior Michael Haynes (Edwardsville, Ill.) improved his performance in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday as he finished sixth in the finals with a time of 15.54 seconds after placing seventh in the preliminaries on Friday. 

Gallaudet's 4x100 meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 43.19 seconds. The team consisted of Roberts, Gregory, freshman Omar Harvey (Newark, N.J.) and Varice.

In the field events, senior Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) was third in the shot put with a top toss of 12.77 meters. Junior JaQuan Thomas (Savannah, Ga.) was sixth (10.95 meters) and sophomore Juan Cornejo (Hamburg, N.J.) was ninth (10.58 meters). 

Garner was seventh in the discus with a toss of 36.44 meters followed by Thomas in 11th (33.29 meters) and Cornejo in 15th (32.60 meters).


  • Sophomore Jordan Kray (Fremont, Calif.) was 10th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.85)
  • Senior Louie Akuffo (Bowie, Md.) finished 33rd in the 200-meter dash (24.39)
  • Harvey placed 34th in the 200-meter dash (24.48)

GU is off for the next several weeks before competing at the Jim Taylor Invitational on March 30 at Susquehanna University.
