HUNTINGTON VALLEY, Pa. – The Gallaudet
University men’s and women’s cross country teams are
set to compete at the 2012 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC)
cross country championships hosted by Penn St.-Abington at Lorimer
Park on Saturday, Oct. 27.
This year’s men’s event will feature 11 of the conference’s 13 member institutions. Gallaudet men’s cross country is paced by sophomore Chris Davis (Stillwater, Okla.), and freshmen Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.). The three runners have been the top three finishers for the Bison in three of their five meets this season. Close has been the top finisher for Gallaudet in four of the meets. Last season, GU placed 10th overall at the NEAC championships.
The field for the women’s championship race will feature 12 member schools. Junior Shadoe Williamson (Austin, Texas), sophomore Lindsey Corthell (Orlando, Fla.) and freshman Jill Schellekens (Vancouver, British Columbia) lead the Bison into the action. Corthell has been the top finisher for the Gallaudet women in four of their five events while Williamson and Schellekens have been consistent top finishers. Last year the Bison placed 8th overall at the NEAC championships.
The women’s 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) race is set to begin at 9 a.m., while the men’s 8-kilometer (4.96 miles) race will start at 10 a.m. The top five finishers for each team will count towards their team’s overall score, with the best overall score from each race taking home the championships.
The first place finisher of each race will be named the conference’s runner of the year, while the top 21 runners from each race will be named to the NEAC all-conference teams.
