CLERMONT, Fla. - The Gallaudet University softball team dropped a pair of Division III non-conference games Tuesday against University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 11-3, and Bowdoin College, 11-0, as both games ended after five innings of play at Hancock Park.
Gallaudet (2-8) scored the game's first run against Wisconsin-Stevens Point before the Pionters (6-6) scored six straight runs in two innings to take control of the game. GU added a run in the third and fourth to cut the margin in half, 6-3. UWSP responded with five consecutive runs to end the game by the eight-run rule after five innings.
The Bison had eight hits in the game led by junior Kate Fetzer (Noblesvile, Ind.) and freshman Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.). Senior Mia Fernandez (Artesia, N.M.) and Barlow both had a RBI in the loss. Senior Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the loss in the circle for the Bison as she allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on nine hits, three walks and three strikeouts. The Pointers blasted two home runs against the Bison.
In the second game of the day, Bowdoin pitcher Emily Griffin (3-1) threw a one-hit shutout as the Polar Bears won by 11. Griffin gave up a double to Barlow in the second inning before she finished with six strikeouts and two walks. Bowdoin (8-4), the visiting team, scored four times in the second and fifth innings. Barlow (2-3) took the loss as she allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on 14 hits, two walks and one strikeout.
GU will conclude its Spring Break trip with two games on Wednesday against National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) teams in Mount Vernon Nazarene University and University of Rio Grande at Legends Way Ball Fields.
