WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University lost a non-conference doubleheader to nearby rival Catholic University of America 9-0 and 8-0 on a picturesque Thursday afternoon at the GU Softball Complex.
The twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at Catholic but got moved to Gallaudet due to poor field conditions. Gallaudet (3-14), the visiting team for these games, dropped the first game in five innings and the second game in six.
Catholic (7-5) broke open the first game with eight runs in the fourth as four Bison errors allowed the Cardinals to keep the inning alive. In the second game, Catholic took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning when it plated six runs on six hits and were aided by four Bison errors. The game ended with Gallaudet's fifth error as a dropped fly ball allowed the eighth and final run to score in the sixth.
Senior Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the loss in the second game as she allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Freshman Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) lost in the circle in the first game as she allowed nine runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks. Barlow had one of Gallaudet's two hits in the first game and had a double in the second game.
The Bison will host Penn St.-Abington (2-1-1) in a four-game North Eastern Athletic Conference series this weekend at the GU Softball Complex. GU will play at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
