GU drops first two games to start Spring Break in Florida

MINNEOLA, Fla. - The Gallaudet University softball team began its Spring Break trip here in Florida with a doubleheader against National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school Indiana Tech at the Minneola Athletic Complex on Monday. The Warriors (3-7) swept the Bison (2-6) with a 14-2 win in five innings and a 10-2 win in six.

In the first game, Indiana Tech held a 4-0 lead before breaking the game open with eight runs in the fourth inning. Gallaudet was plaqued by errors as it committed six in the loss. Junior Anna Lynch (Falls Church, Va.) had a triple and scored a run in the fourth inning while senior outfielder Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) had a RBI triple in the fifth. Indiana Tech's Hannah Foltz blasted two home runs as she drove in four runs and scored three times.

Indiana Tech scored five runs in the second inning of the second game to take a 6-0 lead and the Warriors never looked back as they ended the game in the sixth with their 10th run as they led by eight after five innings. GU had six different batters collect a hit in the loss as the Bison made three more errors in the field against the Warriors. The Bison scored a run in the third and fourth innings to cut the lead to four, 6-2, before Indiana Tech plated three in the fifth and one in the sixth to end the game by the eight-run rule. 

Gallaudet will face Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Bowdoin College on Tuesday, March 17, at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla., in the evening.
