LANCASTER, Pa. – The Gallaudet University softball team lost its doubleheader on the road Saturday against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Lancaster Bible College, 7-3 and 7-1.
The Bison (4-25, 1-11 NEAC) got a late start in the first game, not scoring until the fifth inning, as they found themselves down 6-1 heading to the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Kristi Luna (Austin, Texas) doubled home senior Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) in the fifth. GU added two more runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough. Luna reached due to an outfielder error and Ciccarelli and senior pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored. Murphy (0-11) took the loss as she pitched the complete game, allowed seven runs on 11 hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
Gallaudet kept LBC scoreless for four innings to start the second game. The Chargers (9-15, 7-7 NEAC) finally broke through against freshman pitcher Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) and scored five runs in the fifth inning. GU plated one run in the top of the sixth, while the Chargers tacked on two more in the bottom half of the frame.
Barlow (3-10) took the loss in the circle as she allowed seven runs on 11 hits and one strikeout. Ciccarelli scored Gallaudet's lone run.
LBC pitcher Kelsey Collins (6-5) took the win in the first game as she only allowed four Bison hits, three runs, six strikeouts and no walks. Emily Coffman earned the win in the second game with only three hits, one run, and one walk.
Gallaudet will remain in Pennsylvania this weekend and travel to Reading, Pa., tomorrow to face conference foe Penn St.-Berks (10-10, 9-5 NEAC) in a doubleheader at noon.
