WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University softball team was swept Thursday by McDaniel College 11-2 in five innings and 10-3 in the non-conference doubleheader at the GU Softball Complex.
Gallaudet (2-4) fell behind 4-0 after three innings to McDaniel (2-0) and after scoring one run the Bison couldn't recover after a seven-run fourth by the Green Terror.
Senior outfielder Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) doubled home junior shortstop Kate Fetzer (Noblesville, Ind.) in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't enough as the game ended due to the eight-run mercy rule after five innings.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) got roughed up for 11 runs but due to five fielding errors only one run was earned off nine hits, two walks and one strikeout.
First baseman Megan Liebknecht (3-for-3, two runs, two RBI) and third baseman Taylor Hishon (2-for-3, run, two RBI) blasted home runs over the fence in the third and fourth inning, respectively. Caroline Brehm (1-0) threw the complete game win as she allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, two walks and struck out nine batters.
In the second game, GU scored three runs after two innings and only trailed by one, 4-3. McDaniel tacked on a run in the third and five insurance runs in the seventh. Fetzer had a hand in two of GU's three runs as she scored the first run for Buff and Blue in the bottom of the first and then hit a sacrifice fly in the second to plate Raquel Grindstaff (New Market, Md.). Ciccarelli had a RBI double, prior to Fetzer's fly out, that scored Barlow.
Senior pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the loss as she tossed a complete game and allowed 10 runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walked three and struck out two. Ciccarelli led the Bison offense with three hits (two doubles, single) and two RBI in the twinbill.
Jamie Weisser (1-0) picked up the win in the circle as she tossed four innings where she allowed three GU runs on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Taylor Fletcher drove in three runs, two on a double in the seventh, to pace the Green Terror offense.
GU will travel to Florida this weekend for its Spring Break trip where the Bison will play six games against four teams. Gallaudet will face Indiana Tech at the Minneola Athletic Complex on Monday, March 16, at 9 a.m.
