Three Bison honored on Senior Day, GU drops two games to St. Elizabeth

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University softball team celebrated its seniors on Senior Day as they hosted the College of St. Elizabeth in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader. The Bison (4-31, 1-17 NEAC) lost both games to the Screaming Eagles (11-23, 5-13 NEAC), 6-4 and 13-4.

In the first game, GU was held scoreless for the first four innings while St. Elizabeth scored four runs. The Bison came back in the fifth inning to tie the score, 4-4, taking advantage of defensive errors by the Screaming Eagles. Junior Emily Forsberg (Riverside, Calif.) reached base on a single to center field and moved to second on a walk. Junior Kate Fetzer (Noblesville, Ind.) stepped up to the plate with a hit to right field, driving in Forsberg and advancing to second on a fielding error. With Fetzer and Raquel Grindstaff (New Market, Md.) in scoring position, senior Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) hit another ball to the right fielder, who dropped it, allowing the Bison to score two more runs. Ciccarelli advanced to third on the next play, an error on the shortstop, and was able to score on a wild pitch before the end of the inning.

The Bison held onto the Screaming Eagles until they scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. GU was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning and the game ended, 6-4. Freshman Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) took the loss as she tossed a complete game where she allowed six runs on 11 hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

St. Elizabeth freshman Alexandria Garcia (5-8) was the winning pitcher in the first game as she allowed four unearned runs on three hits, four walks and struck out two. She also slammed a home run, her fourth of the season, and drove in three runs and scored twice in the win.

The Screaming Eagles offense took off in the second game as they scored 13 runs on 17 hits. The Bison offense came alive in the fifth inning when it scored four times. Junior Chelsea Lee (South Brunswick, N.J.) hit a double to left center field with two outs to score Ciccarelli and Forsberg. Barlow followed with her own double to right center field to bring home Lee. Kristi Luna (Austin, Texas) brought in Barlow on a single up the middle to cut the lead to three, 7-4.

St. Elizabeth responded with three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win by nine, 13-4.

Senior Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) pitched a complete game where she surrendered 13 runs (10 earned) on 17 hits and walked three.

Junior Christina Scolaro (2-7) took the win in the second game as she pitched four and two-thirds innings where she allowed four runs on five hits, walked three and struck out one. Alexandria Garcia came in to earn her first save of the season. Alexandria's older sister Alyssabel slammed two home runs as she went 4-for-4 at the plate, scored three runs and drove in five. She is tied for second in the NEAC with seven home runs.

The Bison will travel to the College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, N.J., tomorrow to face the Screaming Eagles one last time this season. The NEAC doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.

Between the two games head coach Joseph Kolcun recognized his three seniors and presented senior awards to Ciccarelli, Murphy and catcher Mia Fernandez (Artesia, N.M.). All three seniors have been a part of the Bison softball team for four years. The softball program and the Gallaudet Athletics Department are proud to acknowledge the seniors for all their hard work and dedication over the last four years and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
