WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University softball team put on a hitting clinic here Sunday as they picked up two more victories. The Bison dominated SUNY Delhi, 13-1, and Christendom, 14-3, as they won both games in five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Gallaudet 13, SUNY Delhi 1 (F/5)
Gallaudet batted first and put pressure on the Broncos early in the game. GU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first half inning. The Broncos (1-3) responded with a run in the bottom half before being outscored 10-0 the rest of the way.
The Bison went on to score a run in the second and three in the third before they broke open the game with six runs in the fourth to build a 13-1 lead.
GU held the Broncos scoreless and ended the game in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Gallaudet dominated at the plate during the game and combined for 15 hits. Junior shortstop Courtney Thomas (Yorkville, Ill.) led the charge as she went 3-for-4, scored three runs and added two RBI. She was a home run shy of a cycle.
Senior pitcher Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) struck out six batters and gave up just five hits as she threw the complete game. Barlow improved to 3-4 in the circle this season.
Gallaudet 14, Christendom 3 (F/5)
GU remained red hot in the second game. After Christendom took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Bison were quick to respond and scored four runs of their own to take a 4-2 lead.
Gallaudet (9-10-1) cushioned its lead in the bottom of the second adding seven more runs to extend its lead, 11-2.
The Crusaders (2-4) were able to slow the Bison down but couldn't stop them from putting more runs on the scoreboard as the Bison added one run in the third and two in the fourth.
The game ended in the top of the fifth inning after the Crusaders failed to cut into Gallaudet's 11-run lead.
Senior pitcher Jordan Hogan (Severn, Md.) pitched a complete game as she allowed three runs on nine hits and had one strikeout.
- The Bison combined for 27 runs, 25 hits and 16 RBI during their doubleheader
- Courtney Thomas recorded four multi-base hits (two doubles, two triples) and had the most RBI in both games as she combined for six
- The Bison had no errors against the Crusaders
- Hogan and Barlow now have 15 combined complete games this season
Gallaudet will hit the road to open up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on Saturday, April 1, when they face-off against Lancaster Bible College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
