Bison sweep Cairn in non-conference doubleheader

Gallaudet's softball team huddles up before a game and gets excited to play the game.

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University only needed six innings in Monday's doubleheader against Cairn University to post non-conference wins. The Bison walked-off in the first game, 9-1, and in the second game, 13-5, both in the sixth. Gallaudet (5-9) scored a combined nine runs in the two sixth innings it played on a cold and sun-filled afternoon at the GU Softball Complex.

Game 1: Gallaudet 9, Cairn 1
The Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead before scoring seven runs in the final three innings of play. Gallaudet walked off after it plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Freshman Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) had a two-run single in the sixth and later scored the game-ending run on a Cairn wild pitch.

Junior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) had back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings while freshman Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) added a RBI triple in the fifth. Zacarias had three RBI singles in the game as she helped to get GU on the scoreboard in the first.

GU senior starting pitcher Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) threw a complete game as she allowed one run on two hits, no walks and struck out four.

Cairn starting pitcher Krista Earl (6-3) took the loss as she surrendered eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits and four strikeouts.

Game 2: Gallaudet 13, Cairn 5
As the sun set in the west, time was running out in the game, the Bison scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to end the game, 13-5, by the eight-run mercy rule over the Highlanders (6-4).

GU led off the decisive sixth with five straight hits, including Neild's second triple, to increase its lead to 12-5. After two quick outs, freshman Jessica Monroe (Senoia, Ga.) slapped the ball to Cairn's third baseman who threw the ball away, into right field, as she tried to get Monroe at first. Sophomore Jenny Mendis (Brook Park, Ohio) raced all the way home from first base to end the game.

The two teams scored four runs each in the first inning before GU scored four additional runs in the second inning to take an 8-4 lead.

Zacarias (2-4) picked up the win as she threw five innings and only allowed one unearned run on three hits, one walk and struck out five.

Three different Bison had three hits each led by Neild, Zacarias and Henshaw. The trio all had at least one triple, Neild (two RBI) had two, while Zacarias (four RBI) added a double.

Cairn's Meagan Maratita (0-1) took the loss in relief.
