TITUSVILLE, Fla. - The Gallaudet University softball team kicked off its Spring Break trip here Monday at the Chain of Lakes fields with a non-conference doubleheader against Marywood University from Scranton, Pa.
The Pacers (2-0) swept the Bison (1-6) by the scores of 8-0 in six innings and 11-3 in the second game.
Game 1: Marywood 8, Gallaudet 0 (F/6)
Marywood scored runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings against Gallaudet. The Pacers led 2-0 after three innings before scoring twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth to end the game.
GU had four hits in the game led by sophomore Jenny Mendis' (Brook Park, Ohio) double in the fifth inning as she got stranded on third base.
Senior Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) had a double in the sixth but the next batter popped out to end the inning. Barlow (1-2) took the loss in the circle for the Bison.
Game 2: Marywood 11, Gallaudet 3 (F/6)
GU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second game as freshman Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) singled and scored on a RBI single by Barlow.
Marywood broke open the game with a seven-run third inning off starting pitcher Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.). The Pacers added two more runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.
The Bison battled back and scored twice in the fifth to keep the game going.
The Pacers ended the game in the sixth inning after they scored two more runs to kick in the eight-run mercy rule.
Gallaudet will face Marywood for a third time on Tuesday, March 13, at noon before facing Keiser University from West Palm Beach, Fla., at 2:30 p.m.
