WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University began its 2019 season on a cold and blustery day at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison swept a non-conference doubleheader against overmatched Lincoln (Pa.) University.
Gallaudet (2-0) ran all over Lincoln (0-2) en route to 9-1 and 22-4 victories in five innings before a handful of fans that braved the frigid temperatures.
Game 1: Gallaudet 9, Lincoln 1 (F/5)
Senior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) threw a complete game two-hitter as she allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out eight in five innings of work. GU scored three times in the first inning and put the game away with a five-run fourth inning.
Senior shortstop Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) doubled to right field to drive in two runs in the five-run fourth. Neild finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) scored three times in her Bison debut. GU had six different batters with a hit or more.
Game 2: Gallaudet 22, Lincoln 4 (F/5)
Gallaudet scored seven runs in three different innings as the Bison erased an early 2-0 deficit en route to an 18-run victory.
Hudson had an inside-the-park grand slam as she blasted a shot to right field as GU scored four runs to take a 13-2 lead. Neild followed with her own inside-the-park home run, to nearly the exact same spot.
GU scored seven runs in the first, third and fourth innings. The Bison added another run in the second inning as they scored in every inning and continued to swipe bases while up big.
Freshman Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) picked up the win in the circle as she threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Zacarias and Neild finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a double and triple. Zacarias led all batters with three extra-base hits, including two triples. Neild had all extra-base hits (double, triple, home run) but missed out on the cycle without a single. Hudson drove in five runs and scored twice. GU had seven batters score two or more times in the game.
Tierra Russaw slammed a solo home run over the left field fence for the Lions in the top of the fourth inning as Lincoln trailed 15-3.
Gallaudet is slated to partake in the Virginia Wesleyan University Beach Blast tournament this weekend. The Bison will play four non-conference games starting on Friday, March 8, against Purchase.
