Zacarias hits walk-off against Gators in non-conference split

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader here Sunday against Notre Dame of Maryland University at the GU Softball Complex.

Notre Dame (Md.) won its first game of the season with a 13-6 win over Gallaudet in the first game. The Bison (3-3) rebounded with a 5-4 win in the second game over the Gators (1-1).

Game 1: Notre Dame (Md.) 13, Gallaudet 6
The Gators came out swinging in the first inning and scored five times off GU starting pitchr Elizabeth Stern (Lexington, Mass.). 

Gallaudet started to erase the five-run deficit as it scored twice in the bottom of the first and third innings as the lead stood at 5-4 going into the fourth. 

Both teams scored twice in the fourth before the Gators scored a run in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.

Gators pitcher Jodie Bronushas (1-0) pitched a complete game where she surrendered six runs (one earned) on four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Bison scored six times on four hits and eight errors by the Gators.

Game 2: Gallaudet 5, Notre Dame (Md.) 4
In the second game, Gallaudet rebounded with a strong start as it scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. 

Sophomore shortstop Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) had a two-run triple in the first. 

GU tacked on a fourth run in the sixth before the visiting Gators scored four times in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

Senior pitcher Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with a triple to plate freshman Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.).

Zacarias (2-1) picked up the win as she allowed four runs on seven hits, walked five and struck out a season best eight batters.
