WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader here Wednesday with Notre Dame of Maryland University. The Bison (6-6) dropped the first game, 12-3, and picked up a 13-9 win over the Gators (3-4) in the second game before the afternoon turned into night.
Game 1: Notre Dame (Md.) 12, Gallaudet 3
Gallaudet scored the game's first three runs and took a 3-0 lead into the fifth before the wheels fell off. The Bison gave up 12 unaswered runs over the course of the final three innings. The visiting Gators scored six times in the fifth and three times in the sixth and seventh innings en route to their third win of the season.
GU scored once in the first and twice in the fourth. Senior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) had a RBI double in the fourth to score freshman Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas.). Three batters later, a muffed throw allowed Zacarias to score and give the Bison a three-run lead.
Zacarias (3-2) took the loss in the circle as she allowed nine runs (four earned) on six hits, four walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
Jodie Bronushas (3-2) threw a complete game victory as she allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, two walks and struck out nine Bison batters.
Game 2: Gallaudet 13, Notre Dame (Md.) 9
GU came out the gates on first and scored two or more runs in the first five innings of play. The Bison got on the scoreboard, first, with three runs in the bottom of the first. GU built a 5-1 lead before the visiting Gators took a brief 7-5 lead before Gallaudet responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and three runs the next two innings. GU took a 13-8 lead into the seventh as the sun faded on the horizon.
Zacarias led the Bison offense going 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs scored and one walk. Sophomore Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) scored a game-high four runs as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Freshman Kate Lorenzo (Omaha, Neb.) finished the day 2-for-4, two RBI, two runs and a double. Giuntoli had a RBI triple in the third inning as she went 2-for-3 at the plate and one run scored. Freshman Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored in the lead-off position.
Freshman Freya Seremeth (Frederick, Md.) started the game in the circle for the Bison but Hudson came on in the third and pitched the Bison into the last inning to earn her second win of the season.
Isa Carununga (0-2) took the loss for the Gators as she allowed six runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out two.

- The teams split the four-game season series, 2-2
GU will next host Penn St.-Abington (3-10) on Saturday, March 30, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference opener for the Bison starting at 1 p.m.
