GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly conference student-athlete of the week awards and for the third time this season Gallaudet University senior forward/center Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) was named the women's basketball recipient for the week of January 10.
Faafiti led the Bison (11-0, 8-0 NEAC) to victory on the road in two conference games this past weekend against SUNYIT and SUNY Cobleskill. Gallaudet is off to its best start to a season in program history.
The All-American had a monstrous weekend on the road as she scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 61-57 victory over Cobleskill. The 29 points is the second most she has scored in a game in her two seasons at Gallaudet. The day before she netted 19 points and ripped down 14 rebounds in a 66-59 win over SUNYIT. For the week she averaged 24 points, 14.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
Faafiti is ranked ninth in the nation in steals per game (4.3), 21st in rebounds per game (11.5), 25th in field goal percentage (55.1 percent), 32nd in double-doubles (six) and 34th in points per game (18.5). She leads the NEAC in field goal percentage and steals.
Gallaudet has earned 13 NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards for the 2010-11 season. Faafiti is the repeat recipient of this award since the last one was announced on December 20. Her first honor came back on November 29.
GU returns home to host College of Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday, January 12, as the NEAC game will tip at 4 p.m. The Gallaudet University athletics department is offering free admission to all GU faculty, staff and teachers to both basketball games on Wednesday (Jan. 12) with a valid ID.
