GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly conference student-athlete of the week awards and for record fifth time this season Gallaudet University senior Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) was named the women's basketball recipient for the week of February 21. The Bison swept the two men's and women's basketball awards this week as junior forward Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) was honored on the men's side for a second time this year.
Faafiti had a career week as she led the Bison to a 3-1 record and helped Gallaudet clinch the top seed in this week's NEAC women's basketball tournament. She scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed 25 rebounds in a 76-59 victory over St. Elizabeth. On Sunday, in a 73-54 win over Wells College she reached her 1,000th career point in a Bison uniform in just two seasons with her 10th point of the game. GU was 2-0 at home last weekend with wins over first-place Keuka College and Wells. In the Keuka win she scored 27 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and passed out seven assists to record her 17th straight double-double.
Faafiti is ranked seventh in the nation in double-doubles (19), eighth in steals per game (4.0), 11th in points per game (21.3), 11th in rebounds (13.4) and 28th in field goal percentage (54.0 percent). All NCAA rankings are through February 20, 2011.
Gallaudet has earned 19 NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards for the 2010-11 season. Faafiti has been honored by the NEAC on Janury 18, January 10, December 20 and November 29.
The GU women's basketball team will host the NEAC tournament this weekend and will play either SUNYIT or Penn State-Berks in the conference semifinals on Saturday, February 26, at 4 p.m. in the Field House.
