GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly conference student-athlete of the week awards and for the second time this season Gallaudet University senior forward/center Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) was named the women's basketball recipient for the week of December 20.
Faafiti led the Bison (9-0, 6-0 NEAC) to their ninth straight win to start the 2010-11 season as they beat defending NEAC champion Penn St.-Berks 67-51 on the road on Sunday. The All-American earned her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She added five assists and five steals in the win. Faafiti is ranked fifth in the nation in steals per game (4.6) and seventh in field goal percentage (60.7 percent), she leads the NEAC in both categories. She also ranks second in the conference in free throw percentage (.818), third in scoring (17.3 points per game), fourth in assists (4.00 per game) and rebounding (10.9 per game).
Gallaudet now has 12 NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards for this season. Junior forward Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) from GU was selected as the men's basketball recipient this week to give the Buff and Blue the clean sweep.
Gallaudet is off until the New Year. The Bison will need to be ready for their first game back on Saturday, January 8, when they travel to face SUNYIT (6-1, 5-0). The Wildcats are the only other team undefeated in the NEAC standings. The following day the Bison go up against SUNY Cobleskill (5-3, 4-1). The road doubleheader begins a tough three week stretch where the Bison will face SUNYIT and Cobleskill twice.
