WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a low-scoring affair on Wednesday night the Gallaudet University women's basketball were within striking distance of Lancaster Bible College, one of the top teams in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), but eventually fell 45-31 in the Field House.
Gallaudet (2-10, 0-5 NEAC) was held to a season low 31 points while the Bison defense held Lancaster Bible (9-2, 5-1 NEAC) to just 45 points, the lowest total by an opponent this year. The Chargers sweep the season series with the Bison and hold an overall 4-0 all-time mark against GU. The Bison have lost 10 straight games while the Chargers have won their last four contests.
The two conference teams struggled shooting the ball throughout the game as Lancaster Bible made 25.7 percent of its shots compared to 22 percent by Gallaudet. The Chargers took advantage of Gallaudet's 25 turnovers that led to 15 points for LBC. The Chargers led 27-11 at halftime but Gallaudet outscored Lancaster Bible, 20-18, in the second half.
Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) registered her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Alexa Justus (Forks, Wash.) added eight points and six rebounds while fellow sophomore Claire Tucker (Middletown, Md.) poured in six points and grabbed three rebounds.
Lancaster Bible guard Lauren Heliger scored a game-high 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win.
The Bison hit the road this weekend for two conference games in New York. GU will first go up against Keuka College on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
