WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team defeated Wilson College 69-54 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division game Wednesday night at the Field House to snap a three-game losing streak. The Bison and fans in attendance were clad in pink to show their support in the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "Play 4Kay" pink night.
Gallaudet (6-18, 4-13 NEAC South) came out strong and held the lead for the first seven minutes of the game, until it was tied at nine on a Monica Lyons free throw. Less than a minute later, senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) made two free throws to take back the lead. The Bison were able to hold onto the lead until the 8:39 minute mark when Vanessa Whitfield (12 points, seven rebounds) made a lay-up after she stole the ball. The Phoenix (2-18, 0-16 NEAC South) used a 12-0 run in a three-minute span to take a 24-19 lead. The Bison ended the first half down 37-28.
GU slowly chipped away at the Wilson lead and tied things up with 11 minutes left in regulation. The two teams exchanged the lead one time before the Bison wrestled away the lead for good. The Bison used a 7-0 spurt to give themselves a 50-44 advantage. The Phoenix pulled to within three, 52-49, on a Tara Fields (15 points) jumper at the 6:34 mark. GU answered with eight straight points to win going away.
Stergio racked up her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and 17 rebounds to go with one assist, one block and one steal. Sophomore guard Claire Tucker (Middletown, Md.) recorded 16 points and two steals for the Bison while fellow sophomore Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) grabbed 10 rebounds. Junior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Fields led the Phoenix in points and grabbed seven rebounds, made five steals, two assists and one block. Ashlee Yealy added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Gallaudet will finish the season on Saturday, Feb. 16, when the Bison host conference foe Penn St.-Berks (9-13, 8-8 NEAC South) at noon.
