Warren's 20-point career game sparks GU's comeback over SUNY Cobleskill in OT

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University won a down to the wire overtime game, 64-60, against SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday in the Field House between the two North Eastern Atlantic Conference (NEAC) women's basketball teams.

The Bison (10-10, 7-4 NEAC) traded shots with the Fighting Tigers (5-15, 3-9 NEAC) in the first three minutes of overtime. Junior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) went to the free throw line and made both shots to give the Bison a 59-58 lead with 1:59 on the clock. SUNY Cobleskill missed two shots but a Bison turnover gave the Fighting Tigers another chance that they capitalized on. Shelby Preston (13 points, 12 rebounds) made a layup off an assist from Tracee Schiebel (nine points) as the visitors led by one, 60-59, with a minute to go. Junior forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball back up for two of her eight points as the Bison regained the lead with 40 seconds left. Cobleskill turned the ball over and had to foul senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.), who made 1 of 2 free throws, with 10 seconds left. The door was open for the Fighting Tigers to tie the game or win it. Kady Porterfield (16 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks) drove to the baseline but lost the handle and the ball went out of bounds, as she fell to the ground, as one second remained on the clock. Weiss (11 points) returned to the free throw line to ice the game with two made free throws.

Junior guard Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) netted a career-high 20 points and a game-high four steals in the win. Four Bison reached double figures in Warren, senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.), Weiss and Peters (10 points, seven rebounds, four assists). Stergio notched a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and passed out six assists.

GU started the game hot as it led 9-2, just over four minutes into the start of the game. Cobleskill regrouped and gradually chipped away at the Bison lead and tied things up at 17 at the 7:41 mark. The Bison were then tangled up with a back-and-forth contest the rest of the half. Kaena Davenport (16 points) made a 3-pointer with four seconds left before the break to give the visitors a 30-28 lead at the half.

The Fighting Tiger seemed to have all momentum on their side at the start of the second half, as they went on an 8-0 run and led GU by 10, 38-28, four minutes in. SUNY Cobleskill's lead later grew to 51-40 with seven minutes left in regulation. Gallaudet never gave up and received a spark as it went on a 10-0 run as Cobleskill missed five shots and turned the ball over two times in three minutes.

Warren tied the game at 52-52 with a jump shot at the 2:16 mark and a minute later gave the Bison their first lead of the second half, 54-52. The Fighting Tigers forced overtime after a Porterfield basket with 31 seconds left. GU had a final chance to win it in regulation but Peters lost the handle down low as the ball went out of bounds in the waning seconds.

The Bison will continue conference play at home as they take on NEAC foe Wilson College tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 9) in the Field House at 2 p.m.
Note: Gallaudet was participating in the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association Play 4Kay Pink Day. Proceeds from today's game will be donated to help fight breast cancer.
