WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team won its second straight game Saturday night as it took down non-conference opponent Goucher College, 62-43, to close out the first half of the 2013-14 schedule.
After falling behind 6-4 in the first six minutes of the game, the Bison (5-4) were able to compose themselves and come out firing. Junior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) took over in the paint as she scored eight of her 10 points in 10 minutes, as the Bison led 23-13. Gallaudet took a 12-points lead into halftime up 29-17 after senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) hit a jump shot and nailed two free throws.
The Gophers (4-4) tried to fight back early in the second half as they scored the first basket 16 seconds in but Gallaudet was too much. GU went on a 14-4 run and led 43-23 with 16:24 left in regulation. The Bison stayed hot as they widened the lead to 25 points with just over four minutes left in the game.
Stergio led all-scorers with 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) was a menace on defense as she recorded a game-high five steals in addition to her 13 points. Freshman forward Isabella Hasty (Fort Worth, Texas) was huge coming off the bench for the Bison as she controlled the paint with 10 rebounds and eight points.
Goucher was led by guards Sharnell Huff and Yael Pomper as they both pitched in with eight points and combined for three assists and three steals.
The Bison are now off until the New Year when they will host non-conference opponent Bryn Athyn on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 6 p.m.
