WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's basketball team won its first game of the season on Saturday at the Field House against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe, College of St. Elizabeth, 58-52, in the GU's home opener.
While the Bison (1-3, 1-0 NEAC) maintained the lead for a vast majority of the game, they played a close game with the Screaming Eagles (2-2, 0-1 NEAC). The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the first half and even exchanged leads four consecutive times before the Bison pulled ahead 23-16 at halftime.
The second half proved to be just as close as the Bison got too comfortable towards the end and watched their 10-point lead (50-40), the largest of the game, be cut down to two, 54-52, with only 1:16 remaining in regulation. St. Elizabeth was forced to foul in an attempt to get back possession. However, Gallaudet seniors Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) thrived under the pressure and hit two clutch free throws, each, before the clock expired securing the six-point win.
Latham had a standout game as she scored a team-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Stergio finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Senior point guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) had a team-high three assists and pitched in eight points int the win. Junior forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) posted a team best 10 rebounds. Freshman Isabella Hasty (Fort Worth, Texas) came off the bench and scored nine points in the Bison win.
