Bison stampede past Patriots in GU Holiday Tournament consolation game

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team earned third place Saturday at the GU Holiday Tournament after defeating Valley Forge Christian College, 87-34, in the Field House.

The Gallaudet defense was strong as it only allowed Valley Forge (1-6) 12 first-half points and forced 16 turnovers. The Bison (4-4) went on a 16-0 run midway through the first half followed by an 11-0 run to finish the half with a comfortable lead, 45-12. The Bison maintained their momentum in the second half forcing 10 additional turnovers and out rebounded the Patriots 28-17. Gallaudet never gave up the lead en route to its biggest win this season. The 53-point win is the largest for the Bison since a 56-point win on Nov. 27, 2010.

Gallaudet was led by senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) who recorded a game-high 25 points to go along with nine rebounds. Freshman forward Isabella Hasty (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded the team's only double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, all career best totals. Junior guard Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) had a game-high seven assists in the win. Junior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) led all players in rebounds with 15. Nine different Bison played in the game and recorded at least two points each.

Stergio was named to the all-tournament team after her performances over the last two days. She was accompanied by Mikala Brinson of Valley Forge Christian College, Blessing Hayes and Andrea Watkins of Trinity Washington University and Amani Lightbourne and Amely Del Rosario of Lehman College. Del Rosario was named tournament MVP after scoring a game-high 24 points and dishing out five assists in the championship game against Trinity Washington University. Lehman defeated Trinity, 82-75.

The Bison (3-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference) host Wilson College (0-4, 0-1 NEAC) in a conference match up tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 8) at 3 p.m.
