Second half run stings Gallaudet against Randolph-Macon

WASHINGTON – The New Year presented a challenging non-conference game for the Gallaudet University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Randolph-Macon College. The Bison (2-4) were up to the task and hung tough with the Yellow Jackets (8-2) before they pulled away in the second half en route to a 71-51 victory.

The two teams went into halftime knotted at 29 as neither team led by more than five points in the opening 20 minutes of play. The game saw four more ties to begin the second half before the visitors pulled away on a 14-2 run, in just over a six-minute span, midway through the half. The Bison turned the ball over seven times and made 1 of 6 shots during that pivotal span.

GU cut the R-MC lead to single digits, 51-42, after Alexa Justus (Fork, Wash.) converted a three-point play at the 8:12 mark but that would be as close as the Bison got the rest of the game. Yellow Jacket guard Hannah Livermon (24 points, nine rebounds) drained three of her game-high six three-pointers down the stretch to help R-MC pull away.

Junior guards Zamica Gage (Washington, D.C.) and Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) paced the Bison offense with 14 points. Gage added nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Senior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the third Bison in double figures with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Bison had 28 turnovers that led to 26 points for the Yellow Jackets. Both teams had 46 team rebounds in the contest.

Katie Anderson added 18 points and nine rebounds while Sarah Parsons chipped in 11 points for the visitors.

Gallaudet will jump back into conference play on Tuesday when the Bison (1-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference) travel to Penn St.-Abington (4-1, 1-0 NEAC) for a 1 p.m. game.
