MINNEAPOLIS – Gallaudet University junior guard/forward Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) was named to the 2017-18 D3hoops.com women's basketball All-East region third team on Tuesday. This is Neild's first selection to the D3hoops.com All-Region team and the fifth time in program history that a GU player has been selected for all-region honors.
Neild is one of three players from the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) honored as conference Player of the Year Khristaijah Jackson from SUNY Poly was named to the second team while Lancaster Bible College forward Courtney Goyak was selected to the third team.
Neild, an All-NEAC first team selection this season, is second in NCAA Division III women's basketball for scoring with 650 points. In fact, Neild has 73 more points than D3hoops.com East Region Player of the Year Kaitlyn Read from New York University.
Neild is third in the nation for points per game (24.1) and minutes played (1,012), fifth in field goal attempts (503), 10th in free throws made (147), 13th in steals (98), 14th in minutes played per game (37.48), 18th in steals per game (3.63), 20th in three-point field goals made (75), free throw percentage (87 percent) and 29th in three-point field goals per game (2.78).
She finished the season with 650 points, 211 rebounds, 98 steals, 72 assists and 31 blocks. She shot 42.5 percent from the field (214-for-503) and made 147-for-169 (87 percent) from the free throw line and 75-for-199 (37.7 percent) from three-point range. She averaged 24.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.6 steals, 2.7 assists and 1.1 blocks per game in 27 starts. She scored double digits in every game but one and scored 30 or more points in seven games and 20 or more points in 18 games including the final nine games of the season. Neild recorded nine double-doubles. She scored a career best 37 points at Morrisville St. (Feb. 3) and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds vs. Penn St.-Berks (Feb. 20). Her other high marks for steals (8 vs. Morrisville St. on Feb. 3), assists (9 vs. Valley Forge on Feb. 10) and blocks (3 vs. four different opponents) this season.
The Bison finished the season in the NEAC tournament semifinals with a 13-14 overall record and 9-7 conference mark.
Players chosen to the D3hoops.com All-Region team are eligible for All-American selection. The D3hoops.com All-American men's and women's teams will be announced at the end of this week, in conjunction with the Division III basketball national championships.
Neild joins former Bison; Zamica Gage (2015-16 All-East 3rd team), Lindsay Stergio (2013-14 All-Atlantic 3rd team) and Easter Fa'afiti (2009-10, 2010-11 All-Atlantic 1st team) to have earned D3hoops.com All-Region honors. Fa'afiti was also the 2009-10 D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Player of the Year.
This is the 17th year D3hoops.com has named an All-Region team and this year's All-America team will be the 21st annual All-American selections. The D3hoops.com All-American teams, along with those of the respective coaches' associations, are the only ones recognized in the NCAA record book.
There were 680 nominations for men's and women's basketball all-region consideration. Sports Information Directors (SID) in each region voted on the teams. Schools were contacted multiple times to make sure players were nominated by their respective SID. The All-Region teams include three teams of five players (two teams if the region has 40 or fewer teams), a player of the year, rookie of the year and coach of the year. The Northeast region has four teams due to the amount of schools in its area.
