Bison begin season with loss to William Paterson at Emmanuel College Tip Off Classic

BOSTON - The Gallaudet University women's basketball 2017-18 season tipped off here Saturday in the 34th annual Emmanuel College Tip Off Classic. The Bison fell to William Paterson University, 82-54.

Gallaudet (0-1) trailed throughout the game as  WPU jumped out to a 25-16 lead through one quarter of play. The Pioneers led 46-29 at halftime.

Sophomore guard Jakkisha Smith (Dallas, Texas) scored a game-high 18 points as she made 8 of 12 shots from the floor and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) recorded a double-double in her Bison debut. Neild scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, passed out three assists and made three steals in 31 minutes. Junior Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) added nine points off the bench.

William Paterson (1-1) was led by Sihana Asani and Tori Woetzel who scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. 


  • WPU's bench outscored GU's by 29, 41-12
  • The Pioneers had 18 second-chance points
  • WPU held a 46-16 edge in points in the paint

Gallaudet will meet Yeshiva University (1-1) in Sunday's consolation game at 1 p.m. The Maccabees lost to Emmanuel 100-18.
