WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University women's basketball head coach Stephanie Stevens along with several current and former student-athletes helped with the 7th annual National Deaf Girls Basketball (NDGB) Camp held at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) in Frederick, Md., this past June 25-29. The camp featured deaf and hard of hearing females, ages 10-18, from all over the country during the week long camp.
Everyday the NDGB staff recognized Campers of the Day. The practice stations emphasized fundamentals like correct form, footwork, terminology and position work to name a few.
"It's hard to believe that we just concluded our 7th consecutive NDGB camp at the end of June. Each year, we have seen tremendous growth in the number of campers and the fundamental development of camp," said Stevens. "Since 2013, our Gallaudet women's basketball program has been involved with the NDGB camp by providing staff and coaches, who have been either former campers and/or past, current, and future Bison."
For the sixth consecutive year the camp attended a Washington Mystics WNBA game at the Capital One Arena where they hosted the New York Liberty.
"We would like to send our appreciation to the co-founders of the NDGB camp, Amy Mowl and Jon Mowl, for allowing us to return to camp every year," added Stevens. "This camp has been successful because of the partnership with Maryland School for the Deaf, Gallaudet Admissions and the Washington Mystics. Thank you for an amazing camp. We are already gearing for next summer!"
The camp has established a core group of future leaders on and off the court by encouraging camp staff and coaches to return and grow the women's game. A handful of veteran staff members (Gallaudet women's basketball alumni) returned for their third+ year. Current, former and future Gallaudet basketball student-athletes and support staff included; Amy Mowl (seventh year), Jon Mowl (seventh year), Elena Ciccarelli (sixth year), Stephanie Stevens (sixth year), Leslye Kang (fourth year), Kelly Simcik (fourth year), Kelli Barnes (third year), Mia Goldberg (third year), Emelia Beldon (second year), Victoria Monroe (second year), Sabina Shysh (second year), Fatuma Ali (first year), Tiffany Anderson (first year), Ernelina Beldon (first year), Hannah Neild (first year), Becka Pittard (first year) and John Werner, Jr. (first year).
The 8th annual National Deaf Girls Basketball Camp will be held next June 2019 at MSD. Finalized dates for the camp will be announced at a later date.
