Lead slips away from Bison on the road against St. Mary's (Md.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Gallaudet University's women's basketball lead quickly vanished in the third quarter on the road here Saturday as the Bison lost to St. Mary's College of Maryland by two points, 72-70.

Gallaudet (5-4) took a 33-23 lead in to halftime and extended the margin to 42-28 at the 6:49 mark in the third quarter. 

St. Mary's (2-6) went on a quick 17-0 run, in just under five minutes, to take a 45-42 lead as the Seahawks outscored the Bison 29-13 in the decisive third quarter.

The Seahawks took a 52-46 lead into the final 10 minutes of regulation. GU took its last lead on a made free throw by senior guard/forward Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) at the 7:43 mark as the Bison led 53-52.

The game remained close down the stretch but Gallaudet missed four field goals in the final minute.

Neild finished with a season-high 35 points as she made 11 of 24 shots and drained five 3-pointers. She completed the double-double with 13 rebounds (10 defensive), four assists, four steals and one block.

Sophomore guard Emelia Beldon (Frederick, Md.) added 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals while junior guard Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) scored 10 points and five rebounds.

The Seahawks had four players in double figures led by forward Gina Seifert's double-double with 16 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Guard Katie Robey had her own double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

  • Shysh grabbed nine defensive rebounds and passed out four assists
  • SMCM held a 53-47 edge in rebounds
  • GU led 14-7 after the first quarter

Gallaudet will next host The Catholic University of America (4-4) on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Field House.
