LUBLIN, Poland - Team USA earned the bronze medal at the 2019 World Deaf Basketball Championship hosted here Saturday in Poland as the women's team defeated Turkey, 76-72, in the GLOBUS Sports Hall.
Team USA avenged an early 65-61 loss to Turkey in Pool B play where the red, white and blue went 3-1. Team USA defeated Ukraine, 83-50, in the quarterfinals before being knocked off 75-74 to Lithuania in the semifinal round.
Greece went on to win the 2019 World Deaf Basketball Women's Championship with a 51-42 win over Lithuania. Greece, who went 1-3 in Pool B play and lost 76-50 to Team USA, won three straight games in the medal round to claim its first world deaf basketball women's championship. The women's world championship consisted of 10 teams during the 10-day tournament.
Team USA had several Gallaudet alumni and two incoming student-athletes on its roster. Team USA was led by recent graduates Hannah Neild '19 and Sabina Shysh '19 along with Zamica Gage '16 and Nukeitra Hayes '12. Incoming student-athletes consisted of Cassidy Perry and Valerie Phlaum.
Neild scored 30 points and 14 rebounds whiles Hayes added 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Team USA in the bronze medal game.
Neild and Hayes were named to the Best Five all-tournament team while Neild took home tournament top scorer honors.
