Defense stands strong for a half before Morrisville gets past Bison

WASHINGTON – The defense was stout on Sunday afternoon as Gallaudet University and Morrisville State College played a scoreless first half before the visiting Mustangs found the back of the net three times and won this North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game, 3-0, at Hotchkiss Field.

Junior goalie Jennifer Livengood (Jacksonville, Fla.) made 11 of her game-high 17 saves in the first half as the Mustangs fired 18 shots. Gallaudet's defensive line of senior Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.), Ashleigh Weatherholtz (Front Royal, Va.), junior Victoria Thompson (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and sophomore Christine Keller (Carlsbad, Calif.) played strong for nearly 50 minutes before the Mustangs (6-4, 4-4 NEAC) found some holes in the defense.

Morrisville scored twice in a nine-minute span when midfielder Paris Matteo (one goal, one assist) blasted a 30-yard shot over Livengood's head in the 48th minute for the game's first score. Matteo then assisted Amber Welsh on her third goal of the season in the 57th minute. Celia Abbott scored an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute to cap the scoring for the Mustangs.

Morrisville outshot Gallaudet 35-7 in the game and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks in the game. Angela Marriott made two saves in goal for the Mustangs for the win.

Gallaudet (1-9, 0-7 NEAC) is in the midst of a four-game homestand and will host Hood College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
