Second half comeback spurs Gallaudet to victory over Notre Dame (Md.)

Gallaudet celebrates Wednesday night's game-winning goal against Notre Dame (Md.). Members of the bench are excited with arms straight up in the air. Several players hug on the field after the goal was scored. It is night time and the turf is green.

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University and Notre Dame of Maryland University were minutes away from ending Wednesday night's women's soccer game in a tie. That was until junior Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) lifted a shot past the Gators goalie in the 88th minute to give the Bison a 2-1 non-conference victory.

Shysh's first goal of the season sent the Bison bench and players into a jubilant frenzy as Gallaudet celebrated its first win over Notre Dame (Md.) since 2010. GU is 2-7 all-time against the Gators.

It was not all rosy for Gallaudet (2-1) as the host trailed 1-0 at the half and for the first 15 minutes in the second half. Notre Dame (0-1) got on the scoreboard right before the half on a Meghan Conner goal from Alla Stepanov, off the corner kick, in the 42nd minute.

The Bison knotted the game at one in the 60th minute when the offense went on an attack. Freshman Danielle Wheeler (San Jose, Calif.) crashed the cage with a shot that was deflected off Notre Dame goalie Loren Pardoe (five saves) and right to the feet of fellow freshman Hailey Montoya (Mentone, Calif.), who scored her second goal of the season into the empty net.

Sophomore goalie Silvya Levesque (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) finished with 11 saves in the win.

  • The Gators doubled up the Bison with shots, 20-10
  • Notre Dame held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks

Gallaudet will regroup and prepare for University of Valley Forge (2-0), who will visit on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. The game will be played on Hoy Field.
