Bison swamped by Gators in double overtime

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking double-overtime game to Notre Dame of Maryland University here Friday night under the lights at Hotchkiss Field. The visiting Gators spoiled the Bison home and season opener with a 1-0 victory with four minutes left in the second overtime period.

Sophomore Julia Hagis lifted a high-arcing shot from the far right side of the goalie box, after dodging several Bison defenders to create some space and get a shot off. Hagis' shot drifted slowly over the head of Gallaudet goalie Silvya Levesque (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie and end the game.

Gallaudet (0-1) outshot Notre Dame (1-0) by four, 24-20, but it was the Gators that had three shots in the second overtime period while the Bison had none.

The Bison had a golden opportunity in the first overtime when sophomore Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) received a nice cross from freshman Payton DeGraw (Salt Lake City, Utah) and pushed the shot right of the goal with a minute left. Neild finished the game with 11 shots (four on goal).

Notre Dame goalie Myla Young (1-0) picked up the scoreless shutout as she recorded 12 saves.

  • Levesque finished the game with eight saves in 61 minutes played
  • DeGraw (five saves) played the first half in net before switching to the field
  • GU took three corner kids, all in the first half, while Notre Dame had two second-half corners
  • The Gators outshot the Bison 5-3 in the overtime periods

Gallaudet will play host to St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Sunday, Sept. 1, at noon.
