GU women's track and field participates at Goucher Classic

TOWSON, Md. - The Gallaudet University women's track and field team participated in the Goucher Classic here Saturday hosted by Goucher College. The Bison finished in 10th place after accumulating six team points. 

Junior sprinter Lawjen Ashmore (Fairbanks, Alaska) and senior sprinter Shellane McKitty (Yonkers, N.Y.) were the top finishers for the Bison. 

Ashmore was able to score the only six points for the Bison as she placed third in the 400-meter dash, as she crossed the finish line in one minute and 1.55 seconds.

McKitty finished just behind her in ninth place with a final time of one minute and 6.45 seconds. She was just one spot shy of scoring more points for Gallaudet.

Ashmore and McKitty also ran in the 100 and 200-meter dash events.

In the 100-meter dash, Ashmore took 14th place (13.67) and was less than four tenths of a second short of qualifying for the final heat. Once again, McKitty was right on her heels, taking 15th place (13.70).

McKitty finished the 200-meter dash in 11th place (27.67) just ahead of Ashmore who finished in 12th place (27.73 seconds).

Freshman Tiffany Anderson (Forest Lake, Minn.) was the top finisher for the Bison in the field events. Anderson took part in the javelin throw and placed 10th with a toss of 19.40 meters (63 feet, eight inches). 

Stevenson University won the meet with 171 points followed by Baldwin Wallace in second place (167) and Coppin State in third (102).


  • Senior Melissa Mischo (Salt Lake City, Utah) placed 11th in the 100-meter hurdles (20.96) and 38th in the 200-meter dash (31.40)
  • Sophomore Karina Mitchell (Las Cruces, N.M.) placed 12th in the 100-meter hurdles (22.14) and 45th in the 200-meter dash (35.08)
  • Senior Abby Courtemanche (Southbridge, Mass.) threw the shot put 6.03 meters (19 feet, 9.5 inches)
  • Junior Ivy Sahneyah (First Mesa, Ariz.) placed 25th in the 1,500-meter run with a final time of 7:39.18

Gallaudet will head south to Fredericksburg, Va., on Friday, March 31, to participate in the two-day Battleground Relays hosted by University of Mary Washington.
