Gallaudet women's track and field competes at Battleground Relays

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Gallaudet University women's track and field team participated in the Battleground Relays hosted by the University of Mary Washington over the past two days.

Sprinters Lawjen Ashmore (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Shellane McKitty (Yonkers, N.Y.) were the top finishers for the Bison in the track events while freshman Tiffany Anderson (Forest Lake, Minn.) was GU's top finisher in the field events.

Ashmore and McKitty's best finish came in the 400-meter relay. Ashmore crossed the finish line in sixth place overall with a time of 1:00.41 followed by McKitty who finished in ninth place (1:02.61).

The duo also competed in the 100-meter dash and finished in 17th and 18th place, just a few tenths of a second away from qualifying for the finals heat. Ashmore finished in 13.39 seconds and McKitty finished in 13.57 seconds in the event.  

McKitty went on to compete in the 200-meter dash where she finished in 17th place (28.16 seconds).

Anderson continued to excel in the javelin and took sixth place in the event as she threw for 24.20 meters (79 feet, five inches).


  • Junior long distance runner Ivy Sahneyah (First Mesa, Ariz.) placed third in the 3,000-meter run (16:40.35)
  • Sophomore Karina Mitchell (Las Cruces, N.M.) took sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles (21.54)
  • Junior Nicole Musey (Prince George, British Columbia) finished 26th in 6:27.77
  • Junior Abby Courtemanche (Southbridge, Mass.) took 12th place in the hammer event with a toss of 15.23 meters (50 feet)

Gallaudet will head down to Newport News, Va., to participate in the New Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University on Friday, April 14, through Saturday, April 15.
