Pole vault record falls at Hopkins/Loyola Invitational

BALTIMORE - The Gallaudet University women's track and field team placed 11th at the Hopkins/Loyola Track & Field Invitational here Friday hosted by Johns Hopkins University and Loyola (Md.) University on the Hopkins Eastern Campus on 33rd street.

Towson University won the meet with 224.5 team points followed by the host Greyhounds from Loyola (121) and Johns Hopkins (95) in the 11-team field.

Freshman Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) finished fifth in the high jump as she cleared 1.50 meters. Senior Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) was 10th as she cleared 1.40 meters. 

Shysh and freshman Krista Kachnik (Henderson, Nev.) tied the school record in the pole vault as they cleared 2.45 meters. The old mark of 1.85 meters was held by Shysh, set last year at the Atlantic Independent Championship in Berea, Ky., on April 28, 2018.

Junior Jakkisha Smith (Dallas, Texas) was eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 9.89 meters followed by Wetzel in ninth place (9.82 meters). 

Wetzel was ninth in the long jump with a top leap of 5.03 meters. Sophomore Sabrina Hernandez (Ashland, Va.) was 10th in the javelin (25.32 meters).

In the field, Carina Dominguez Can (Hillsboro, Ore.) was 16th in the discus (22.18 meters), 18th in the hammer (20.00 meters) and 19th in the shot put (7.08 meters).

GU's 4x100 meter relay placed sixth overall with a time of 55.11 seconds.

BISON TRACKS

  • Freshman Cassie Friday (Flinton, Pa.) was 14th in the 100-meter hurdles (21.26)
  • Freshman Quanchen Warmack (Danville, Ky.) was 15th in the 100-meter hurdles (22.32)
  • Sophomore Nia Ralston (Danville, Ky.) was 18th in the shot put (7.57 meters)
