GU's Jessica Israel named AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released their 2011 NCAA Division III All-Region teams and Gallaudet University junior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) was picked as an honorable mention selection to the Mid-Atlantic Region.

This is the second award for Israel this season as she was selected to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) all-conference second team last week. Israel ended the regular-season nationally ranked 21st in hitting percentage (.374) and ranked 35th in blocks with 1.11 per set. She also led the NEAC in blocks with 122. Israel finished her season with 198 kills and a 1.87 kill per set percentage. The Bison (28-7) won its second straight NEAC championship and are making their eighth appearance in the NCAA tournament this weekend.

This is the 22nd time since 1986 a Bison player has received AVCA All-Region honors.

The Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year honors went to Mark Birtwistle from Eastern University and Freshman of the Year honors were bestowed to Julie Harvey from Franklin and Marshall College.
