WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball program and head coach Lynn Ray Boren has recently released the official 2015 schedule. Boren is entering his 11th season as head coach and finished the 2014 season with a 22-14 record as the team claimed the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship title for the fifth consecutive year.
GU begins its season on Friday, Sept. 4, on the road at the annual Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg, Pa. The Bison have kicked off their schedule at the Battlefield Classic for the past six seasons. GU went 1-3 in the tournament last year as it faced tough competition from the region.
The schedule features 11 home matches this season with the first match in the Field House on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when the Bison welcome local rival Marymount (Va.) University. Prior to the start of the game the Bison will be recognized for the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. The home slate features the 9th Annual Worthington Classic, an eight-team tournament, on Oct. 9 and 10. The Bison finished 2-2 last year as No. 1 ranked Hope College of Holland, Mich., won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. This year's Worthington Classic will feature Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, Illinois Tech, Virginia Wesleyan College, Catholic University of America, DeSales University, Messiah College and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Gallaudet will travel to Aurora, N.Y., early in October to face three conference foes. The Bison will face Keuka College, Gallaudet's only conference loss in 2014, on Friday, Oct. 2, and face Wells College, the 2014 conference runner-up, and Cazenovia College on Saturday, Oct. 3.
After the Worthington Classic, the Bison will travel to face in-region power Stevenson University on Oct. 14 before three more conference games on the road in Williamsport, Pa., on Oct. 16-17. The following week the Bison will welcome nationally ranked Christopher Newport University to the Field House on Oct. 20 for a big non-conference game.
The Bison will close out their home regular-seasons schedule with a NEAC crossover tournament on Oct. 23 and 24 during homecoming weekend. There will be three teams in attendance, as the Bison face SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Friday evening and Morrisville State College and SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday. The final home regular-season games will also mark Senior Day for the senior class.
The month of October closes on the road for the Bison as they travel to neighboring Catholic University of America on Oct. 28 before playing University of Scranton and Lebanon Valley College on Halloween.
The NEAC tournament quarterfinals will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and will continue with the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 7, followed by the championship on Sunday, Nov. 8. Gallaudet has hosted the NEAC championship tournament three times (2012, 13, 14) since joining the conference in 2010. The NCAA tournament will start the following week.
Notes: Coach Boren has also announced the addition of Cory Behm as an assistant coach for the 2015 season. Behm was a captain and setter on the GU men's volleyball club team during the 2011-12 season.
