Gallaudet will face No. 9 Christopher Newport in first round of NCAA Divivison III women's volleyball championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team (22-13) will travel to Newport News, Va., to face regional host and nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University (31-3) in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division III women's volleyball championship on Friday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. on the CNU campus.

The Bison earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after going undefeated in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship tournament this past weekend. The Bison defeated Keuka College in three straight sets to advance to the championship match against Penn St.-Berks where the Bison won their fifth straight NEAC championship. The Bison hold a 2-9 all-time record in their nine appearances in the NCAA tournament. This is the sixth time GU has appeared in the NCAA tournament under head coach Lynn Ray Boren, who is now in his 10th season.

No. 9 ranked CNU recently claimed its second Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship in a row with a 3-0 win over Salisbury University. CNU, who recently became part of the CAC, has dominated the conference and has claimed eight consecutive league titles. The Captains, who have won 13 straight matches, earned their automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after their win Saturday afternoon. CNU has made 12 NCAA appearances where it is 17-11 all-time in tournament matches. CNU has faced eight teams that made this year's NCAA tournament field and are 5-3 against those opponents.

Christopher Newport is one of the eight regional hosts and the top-seed of the Mid-Atlantic region. The other first round matches at CNU will feature SUNY New Paltz (31-5) vs. Haverford (21-9) at 12:30 p.m., No. 12 Eastern (29-5) vs. Salem (12-13) at 3 p.m. and Stevenson (29-5) vs. Richard Stockton (28-6) at 5:30 p.m. followed by CNU-Gallaudet. The winners will advance to Saturday's second round which begins at 3:30 p.m. and the regional final on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Gallaudet looks to ride the momentum from winning 13 of its past 16 games and advance past the first round for the first time since 2006 when the Bison lost to the eventual national champion, Juniata, in the regional final. The Bison have gone up against two other tournament teams, both in this regional, in Eastern and Stevenson and lost both matches in straight sets.  Gallaudet and Christopher Newport have had seven common opponents this season as the Bison tallied one win and six losses while the Captains went 8-0.

The quarterfinal round will begin on Nov. 21 at Christopher Newport University with the semifinals and finals continuing through the weekend. The championship will be on Nov. 23.
