Gallaudet edges past Catholic in five sets

WASHINGTON – A closely contested women's volleyball match between Gallaudet University and Catholic University of America went the distance Wednesday night as the host Bison won in five sets; 25-10, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10.

Gallaudet (19-12) held a slim 8-7 lead in the fifth set when the two teams switched sides of the court. The Bison picked up the sideout on a Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.) kill as GU rode that momentum to five consecutive points as Catholic (21-12) burned both of its timeouts during the 5-0 run. The last timeout broke Morris' service game as she served the ball into the net as the lead was trimmed to 12-8. Catholic pulled to within two, 12-10, before senior middle hitter Julia Wolff (Belleville, Ontario) slammed home one of her 21 kills (.415 hitting percentage) in the match. Freshman Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) recorded her seventh service ace and Wolff ended the match with a kill from junior setter TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.) to end the match.

Morris recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 20 digs to go with three service aces and three block assists. Hoglind passed out 51 assists, 11 digs and had three service aces. Fellow junior Molly Perkins (Apple Valley, Minn.) was the third Bison in double figures with 14 kills. GU had 15 service aces in the win but the team was hurt by their 12 service errors.

Thomas was on a roll in the first set when she served up nine consecutive points as Gallaudet broken open a 12-8 set and increased the score to 21-8. CUA evened the match after a 25-21 win in the second set. The visiting Cardinals held a slight 18-17 lead in the third set but GU outscored Catholic, 8-3, down the stretch to notch the third set win. In the fourth set, the teams were knotted at 17 before Catholic scored the next six points en route to the 25-20 win.

Catholic was led by Mary Paige Nesfeder's 15 kills and 15 digs while Michelle Seals passed out 35 assists and Michelle Bouchard made 18 digs.

This is the third match that has gone five sets for the Bison but the first win in five sets this season.

Gallaudet will next host Lebanon Valley College and University of Scranton in a tri-match on Saturday, Nov. 1, starting at 11 a.m. GU plays LVC first, followed by LVC against Scranton at 1 p.m. and concluded by Gallaudet against Scranton at 3 p.m.
